AfroFunk. Jazz. Dance!
About
Balboa is an eight-piece live band from Eindhoven, performing originals influenced by Afrofunk from the 70s.
Names like Ebo Taylor, Hugh Masekela and Fela Kuti are the sources of inspiration. On top of that, Ricardo Leverock from the hip-hop collective Damn lays a layer of hip-hop over the music that fits perfectly.
Balboa bridges the gap between afrofunk and hip-hop with a good dose of soul — a super-swinging, feel-good vibe made for dancing.
They've shared stages with Dutch jazz icons including Hans Dulfer and Benjamin Herman, and in August 2024 played the Zelenkovac Jazz Festival in Bosnia. Their debut EP is out now.
